Eyewitness News (EWN) retains its prestigious title of BEST PUBLISHER of the year at the 2016 IAB Bookmarks Awards.
The news brand also scooped GOLD for its Homo Naledi – Interactive Feature in the Special Features Category, SILVER for its WHATSAPP Briefs in the Mobile Publication Category, and Aletta Harrison took home BRONZE for her Prison Yoga article in the News or Feature Writing Category.
“EWN’s awards are recognition for the innovative and rich story-telling we strive to produce on a daily basis in various different forms,” says Sheldon Morais, EWN’s online news editor.
“We’re truly excited about the prospects digital tools and platforms offer us as we go inside the truth, be it into prisons, unpacking significant historical developments such as the discovery of Homo Naledi or helping our audience understand the latest news developments. We’re also pleased that our innovative WhatsApp news brief offering – a first in South Africa – has been recognised for breaking new ground.”
Katy Katopodis, EWN editor-in-chief said: “I’m extremely proud of the team and these awards show that EWN is leading the way in innovation. I’m particularly thrilled that the Whatsapp Briefs were acknowledged as this is an offering that really set EWN apart in the last year.”
The awards ceremony took place on Thursday, 3rd March 2016 at Turbine Hall, Newton.
Now in its eighth year, the Bookmarks Awards – which is an IAB SA initiative – celebrates the best of the best. The Bookmarks Awards are the local digital industry’s highest-calibre awards aimed at identifying and rewarding excellence in digital creative work and execution, benchmarked against international standards and measurable results as judged by a host of local and international judges.
IAB SA CEO Josephine Buys said, “This year’s winning entries illustrate a digital landscape where South Africans are not just excelling in digital from a technical point of view, but using it to produce ground-breaking, emotive work.”
