I am not sure about you, but I was on the thousands, then aged 13, who flocked to Sun City, along with my parents, when it opened back in 1979.
Over the years I have been blessed to see the changes as Sun City grew from just the main Hotel and Casino, to addition of the Cabanas, the Entertainment Centre, the Cascades and the Palace. In between some of this, Vacation World and various activity centres were established in and around the property. The resort becoming a more desirable destination with every addition.
Even though I have been accommodated at every hotel in the resort, the Cabanas has always been one of my favourites – for some reason there is an element of privacy and seclusion that you do not always feel when staying at the Hotel, Cascades or the Palace, where I have also stayed quite extensively.
Arriving at the Cabanas today, to experience first hand the refurbishment that has taken place, is an absolute delight.
As you walk into the room you are transported into a tropical atmosphere with hues of turquoise/green, shocking pink, the startling white crisp linen we all enjoy, and a soft blue light feature that runs along the pedestal dressing table area.A fabulous artwork hangs along the bathroom wall which can be visually enjoyed from all angles of the room.
The bathroom is awesome. The mirror divine. I was so happy to see that the bath has been replaced by a wall to wall shower, which is so much more serviceable in this day and age.
The entrance where the cupboards are positioned, plus a dressing table, now have full length mirrors which add an additional element of light to this crisp tropical atmosphere. Even the hangers have been upgraded – I could do with some of them myself. I am not going to describe them to you – you will just have to come up and see them for yourself.
My only disappointment – is the no dairy situation! A cup of Five Roses tea just tastes kaka with Ciro Tea Whitener. Those little vacuum packed long life milk cups which are also not fabulous would have been most welcome. Well my bad – next time I will remember to bring half a litre of milk to pop into the very handy little fridge stored in the cupboard under the TV.
I have been here for just under two hours now, and have not been able to budge out of the room – it is just so relaxing – however I have put that time to good use and shared my thoughts on how fabulous it is here.
Oh and big ups on the installation of four USB charging points – just what everyone needs when carrying around smart phones and gadgets. All you have to do is bring your charging cable – no more two pin plugs required.
Thank you very much to Sun City for extending your hospitality once again. You rock and I just love it here – some people dream of being a beach bum – Sun City is where I would want to be. I wonder how long it would take to find me if I came to live here indefinitely under a palm tree?
For me you really live up to your social media handle @MillionThrills

NEWS FROM SUN INTERNATIONAL
To grow its popularity still further, the complex is in the final stages of a more than R1-billion revamp. This will entrench its position as one of South Africa’s favorite lifestyle destinations.
Since it was first built, Sun City has been recognized as the destination that provides something for everyone – from luxury travellers to fun-seeking families, couples looking for a romantic getaway or adrenalin-seekers looking for the very best adventure.
Continuing that tradition is the revitalisation of the Cabanas hotel now offers a trendy, modern island-style atmosphere for all guests to enjoy.
Says Mike Van Vuuren, Resort General Manager of Sun City: “The Cabanas hotel offers a fantastic mix of accommodation and services. It’s in a perfect setting for guests near the Sun City Waterworld Lake, ensuring they have a base from which to explore the resort.”
Part of the extensive upgrade is the Valley of Waves, known as one of the greatest water parks in Africa and very popular with Cabanas guests.
A complete transformation of the Valley of Waves includes the addition of two new slides, Nobel’s Descent and Ovango. The food and beverage offering at the Valley of Waves has also been reinvigorated to ensure a fun foodie beach side experience. Guests now have the choice of two new food outlets to choose from, The Brew Monkey and Food Factory.
The Brew Monkey is a gastro pub with a rustic microbrewery feel that overlooks the wave pool, and Food Factory is a fast food outlet offering a selection of freshly prepared meals.
Said Van Vuuren: “We invite people to come and experience the changes for themselves. Take a slide down the Noble’s Descent and enjoy a burger on the beach with friends and family and end your day around the fire pits at Cabanas. There is something for everyone and we’re really excited about creating lasting memories with our guests.
