Ster Kinekor (The Zone, Rosebank) got an early morning Kickstart as hundreds of learners poured in to receive interactive Matric Maths & Science revision lessons in preparation for their Preliminary and Final examinations this year.

Made possible by Key sponsors, the Capitec Foundation, SASRIA and the Telkom Foundation, the programme is a national intervention that has assisted thousands of Matriculants in Maths & Science utilizing Ster Kinekor cinemas as “Theatres of Learning”.

eduCate is made up of 10 pre-recorded revision sessions, 5 in maths and 5 in science.

“We need immediate solutions and the eduCate programme serves our children by motivating pupils to work harder and matriculate with maths so that they can pursue studies in fields with good employment prospects.” – Martin Sweet.

Schools from across South Africa [mostly based in townships and underserviced areas] have been invited to participate in the programme with the support of the Department of Basic Education. Learners are registered, indemnified and transported from their schools to their designated cinema complex(s) and back to their schools after the screenings. Before returning, learners are allowed to interact with teachers and tutors present who are available to address questions from the learners.

This year, the sessions are running over 10 consecutive Sunday mornings having started on 24 July 2016 in all 9 provinces. The filmed content is simultaneously broadcast to a network of digitized Ster Kinekor cinema complexes.

“The collaboration between sponsors including the Capitec Foundation, SASRIA, Telkom Foundation, Central Energy Fund, Western Cape Metro Central Education District, Tsogo Sun,, Gearhouse, Minions, Primestars and The Department of Basic Education has proven to be a successful public/private partnership in the past, with over 180 000 seats having been occupied by aspiring grade 12 learners, wishing to improve their chances of gaining the results required to qualify to study at tertiary institutions” – Martin Sweet.

Over the course of the first 4 weeks of the programme, more than 12 000 seats have been occupied across participating cinemas.

Primestars is extremely passionate about this programme and we are honoured to have sponsors on board that show the same passion for maths & science education and the potential it holds in offering young South Africans a better future.

Capitec Foundation is committed to supporting education initiatives that help improve learners’ performance in maths and science. We support the Primestars eduCate revision programme as it improves learners’ readiness for the matric exams in an unconventional and innovative way.

Sasria SOC Limited (Sasria) is proud to have partnered with Primestars on the eduCate initiative. At Sasria, we regard our corporate social investment (CSI) activities as an integral part of who we are, and as a key instrument in developing skills within the organisation, the insurance industry, and the financial sector as a whole. Furthermore as a state owned entity it is imperative for Sasria to play a meaningful role and contribute to the National Development Plan through making quality education accessible to the youth.

Thokozile Ntshiqa, Sasria SOC Ltd’s Executive Manager for Stakeholder Management says “as an organisation we felt it was fitting for us to participate in this initiative as Maths and Science will lay a good foundation for the learners for a wide variety of careers especially scarce skills which will play a huge role in the sustainable development of our economy.

As South Africa’s leading provider of converged technology solutions, the Telkom Foundation is a natural extension of our mission to connect South Africans to a better life. Through our Foundation we work to improve learners’ performance in maths, science, technology and English. These subjects are core to our industry and also to South Africa’s sustained economic growth. We are honoured to be a part of the EduCate programme which will undoubtedly further these goals.

Speaking at the launch of the 2016 initiative, the Chairman of the CEF board Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi said; “The CEF Group operates across the energy value chain from mining, oil and gas to renewables. As such, we require a steady flow of the right skills entering the energy sector in order to build and sustain the industry into the future. It is therefore critical that South African schools are able to churn out young men and women who will be interested in and capable of pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). As CEF Group we are proud of this association and will ensure that it is the start of a much more intense program of contributing to building a pipeline of critical skills for the country’s energy sector.”

“Giving the chance of a better future to vulnerable young people – through education, lifeskills, and job readiness programmes – is at the core of Tsogo Sun’s far-reaching CSI initiatives. We believe that a good education will go a long way to helping disadvantaged youngsters escape the cycle of poverty and bring wellbeing into their lives. Tsogo Sun works together with like-minded organisations to increase the impact of their efforts as widely as possible. With this in mind, Tsogo Sun is proud to collaborate with Primestars in support of their successful Educate programme, which reaches thousands of high school learners each year, improving their chances of good grades in maths and science in matric – and a brighter future.”

Metro Central Education District has always prided itself in attaining excellent results. At the same time we ensure that Mathematics and Physical Science results improve continuously. To this end we have partnered with Primestars to enable learners to improve their performance in Mathematics and Physical Science. The programme will assist our top end learners to improve our Bachelors’ results because much of our District’s programmes are aimed at our learners at risk. Finally, our District received an award from Department of  Basic Education (DBE) for the most Bachelors passes from 2012 – 2015, therefore we believe that this partnership will assist us greatly in retaining this achievement and reach even greater heights.

We are extremely proud of our partnership with Primestars and the fact that we will be flying them around the country as they work towards changing the lives of young people. We commend the holistic approach to empowering the learners, as the focus is on financial literacy, career guidance, improving learning in Maths and Science through the EduCate initiative, and many other important areas. We wish Primestars the very best for all their future programs and look forward to welcoming them on-board, says, Eve Liebetrau – Executive Manager of Human Resources: Comair Limited.
