Buoyed by overwhelming demand from fans, two legendary South African artists, Francois van Coke and Karen Zoid, are coming together for a full length, hot blooded rock show, Toe Vind Ek Jou, at the Grand Arena, GrandWest on 25 June 2016.
In 2015, the performers released “Toe vind ek jou” which became one of the most beautiful ballads of the year. Capturing the hearts of South Africans, it was the first Afrikaans release in South African history to hit the number one spot on commercial radio charts. The music video has also enjoyed success, reaching almost one million views on YouTube. Now, local fans can experience the song live in all its glory along with a diverse collection of van Coke and Zoid’s latest hits.
“We are thrilled to confirm that two of South Africa’s foremost artists will perform together for their local fans right here at GrandWest. We are expecting a sellout show and urge fans to book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. It promises to be a thumping spectacular,” says Elouise Matthys, the PR and Promotions Manager at GrandWest.
During her career spanning more than 10 years, Zoid has managed to secure an audience of both Afrikaans and English speakers while retaining her style and individuality. Her unmistakable voice, razor sharp lyrics and passionate performances make her a one of a kind performer. She is always pushing boundaries on stage, whether it is with collaborative performances with local legends such as Vusi Mahlasela and Zolani Mahola (Freshlyground) or performing her ‘guilty pleasures’ in her show concept Under the Covers. The success of Drown Out the Noise, her latest album, proves that Zoid is one of South Africa’s premier female rock artists. The album entered at number one on the charts. Zoid currently hosts her own talk show Republiek van Zoid Afrika on KykNet, and was recently announced as one of the judges for The Voice, South Africa.
Van Coke rose to fame as the front man of legendary South African rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and van Coke Kartel. He launched his solo career in February 2015 with the release of his first single, “Moontlik nooit” from his website. On the same day, he released a limited edition 7 inch vinyl with this single and an exclusive acoustic version of “Skree”. Shortly after that, in April 2015, he launched his debut solo album with the release of the poignant ballad “Toe vind ek jou”. It was the first Afrikaans album and single to simultaneously jump to number one positions on the SA iTunes Store. The song was downloaded more than 20 000 times on iTunes thus reaching Platinum status as a single. His solo album celebrates a new chapter in van Coke’s personal life and musical career. It is a rock based album, imbued with folk, country, alternative, industrial and even pop influences. Every song is unique and but throughout the album there runs a golden thread that is exceptionally Francois van Coke.
Van Coke and Zoid’s show at GrandWest kicks off at 20h00. Tickets are on sale at Computicket and range in price from R200 per person.
