After four cities, weeks of travel and thousands of star hopefuls, the Idols SA audition tour for 2016 has come to a close.
Scores of Cape Town’s aspirant singers lined the halls of the GrandWest Entertainment Centre on Saturday for a shot at getting into Season 12 of the popular singing reality show. They came from all walks of life in different styles; the hope in their eyes is what they had in common.
Some hummed to warm up their vocal cords as they waited in the queue, there were nervous giggles, anxious glances and last minute practice sessions in the bathrooms.
Julius Mokonyama, 29, was one of the most nervous as the first in line. “I arrived at 10am on Friday because I didn’t want to risk missing it. I was prepare; I brought toiletries and food, and the other contestants who were camping overnight were nice enough to share their blankets with me,” said the electrician, who originally hails from Limpopo.
Mimicking other regions, Cape Town also saw its fair share of those who regularly do the audition circuit. There was Athini Njaba, 25, from Fish Hoek. While it was her first time on the Idols SA stage, she’d come quite far on Clash of the Choirs in 2015.
Also in line was Zithembe Kosi, 22, who first auditioned in Pretoria last month. He got to stand in front of the judges but came short of a Golden Ticket. The King Williams Town native who currently lives in Delft was even more determined to get further in the contest this time around.
The Mother City talent was not only limited to vocal chord gymnastics, as Peter Michaels from Hout Bay proved. The 23 year-old martial arts champion is rated third in Mzansi and has returned from the Wushu World Championships in Indonesia where he was placed 6th in the world. “I sing, dance, write music and rap. There’s nothing I can’t do if I set mind to it. I was blessed with many talents; but I’m not a master of all yet,” he said.
With auditions now officially over, it’s just a matter of waiting to see how many Golden Tickets Cape Town will receive before the real hard work starts in Theatre Week.
