The Idols XII audition tour is hotting up – and so is the talent.
This week the singing reality show invaded the City of Tshwane, where scores of hopeful future stars lined up outside Pretoria’s State Theatre for their shot at fame.
Close to 3000 wanna-be music sensations flexed their vocal chords at the Pretoria auditions.
There was a singing chef, musical theatre students, fashionistas, band mates and a clique of Christian worship sisters. The characters ranged from the quirky to the reflective, with a healthy dose of ridiculous thrown in.
Flamboyant fashionista and hairstylist Vuyo Bene saved money to travel to Pretoria from East London in the hopes of making it on reality TV. Calling himself Dr Mpandla, the charismatic Bene said he “kills” fashion. “That’s why I’m a doctor of fashion disaster!”
Limpopo motivational speaker Thato Mokoena come to the audition to “prove something” to herself. The 24 year-old entrepreneur said she was auditioning for the second time. “I’m ready for this!” she declared.
Anxiety and exhaustion was etched on some of the contestants’ faces.
Nokuthula Mncube (22) from Vereeniging arrived at 7:30pm the night before the auditions and slept outside. Some camped outside the State Theatre from 4:30am, while others travelled from as far as the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
Audition favourite songs included Jennifer Hudson’s One Night Only, Nathi’s Nomvula and absolutely everything by John Legend. And now we wait to see if the capital city of Mzansi is where the next Idols SA winner is hiding!
The next round of auditions take place at Joburg’s Carnival City on 28 February before rounding off at Grand West Entertainment World in Cape Town on 5 March.
