First birthday celebrations for radio station Hot91.1 took place at La Vie En Rose in Illovo, Johannesburg.

At 6am on Monday 17th November 2014 Hot91.9 took to the air for their maiden flight. One year on, this committed community station has exceeded all their expectations with a soaring listenership,  365 days of community achievements and boasts a line-up of award-winning Joburg radio legends.

“ It has been an unbelievable year in radio”, adds managing director, Lloyd Madurai. “ I have watched the station grow from strength to strength and we delivered on our promise of serving the needs of the community. At the core of our ethos is the passion and drive our presenters have for our listeners and the community initiatives we have been involved in”.

Within a few months of broadcasting, Hot 91.9 made massive strides in the South African radio industry when they walked away with a whopping 5 MTN 2015 Awards namely; Best Breakfast Show Presenter (Darren Scott), Best Breakfast Show (Joburg’s Hottest Breakfast Show), Best Content Producer (William Scott), News Bulletin Reporter (Gladys Sithole) and Best Weekend radio Show (Mark Pilgrim).

Hot Cares is the community arm of Hot 91.9 and is at the heart of the station. It is a personal call to the community to get involved and make a difference. Hot 91.9 takes their causes seriously and have been hard at work this year working on various initiatives. ONE Wingz of Change headlines the Joburg’s Hot Cares feature and has helped, with the aid of our sponsors and listeners, countless causes including assisting Leigh’s family. Leigh was involved in a car accident in 2014 and was left paralysed from her waist down. The Dis-Chem Foundation made a difference in this family’s lives by with a necessity hamper valued at R5000.The ONE Wingz of Change also matched this donation by giving R5000 towards other costs that needed to be covered.

Bongiwe, a 15 year disabled child received a brand new deluxe, foldable electric wheelchair to help her through her daily 2.5 km commute to school. The station’s courier partner, The Courier Guy, took care of delivering this precious gift to Bongiwe in Richmond.

ONE Wingz of Change went one step further and launched Joburg’s Hottest Bursary, which has made such an impact on students wanting a better career through education. Joburg’s Hottest Bursary recipients include: Zanelle Brown’s R27 000.00 needed for her to study teaching this year; Promising law student, Ntokozo Ngubane received a R32 363.00 donation from Hot 91.9 and an anonymous benefactor who settled his outstanding 2014/2015 fees. Goodness Zwane, a nursing student, mother and breadwinner was granted a Hottest Bursary to continue her studies while working, and petrol attendant Martin received a bursary to cover his outstanding fees of R7223.00 for 2015. Hot 91.9 listener Mario and his employer Imperial Motors are paying for his 2016 fees so that Martin can work less, study more and set his sights on becoming a top accountant.

And… In the week leading up to Hot91.9’s first birthday,  the station, sponsors and listeners raised over R239 000 for in one day for the Randburg SPCA when a fire broke out and destroyed the animal kennels and shelters. All the furry babies were rescued and taken to a place of safetly. The very next day, the focus was on the devastating fire that raised a major part of the Kya-Sands Informal Settlement, and within a couple of hours our trusted community dug deep into their pockets once again to raise R95 000.00, set up a mobile feeding scheme and assisted the Gift of the Givers with any additional requirements.
